What I've Been Up To

I'm sure you're all wondering what I've been up to since my great migration across the continent. Well, I have been very busy. We took Katie to school on Sunday and summer officially ended.

On Monday I helped fill the void that my sister's absence left by helping in the dining hall. I was very useful...

In the last week I've been brushing up a little on piano...

I've taken several walks, enjoying the bright, sunny days...

I've jogged a little, when it wasn't too terribly hot...

Hunting for a job has been my primary activity these days...

No luck yet...

Oh! And I've also been relaxing with a little light reading.

Road Trip in Summary

Friday we drove to Murrieta and spent the weekend with Sarah. We went to see Katie and Mikey and meet little Isaiah.
Sunday we met my friend Meredith for breakfast in Old Town Temecula at The Gambling Cowboy. Then we drove to La Quinta to meet the Gromans for lunch. It was so good to spend the week with family and friends that we hadn't seen for awhile.
I found a deal on hotwire.com for a bed and breakfast in Utah. We had a lovely room in an old house. In the morning we had homemade granola parfaits for breakfast before we set of for Zion National Park and two days of hiking.

The outside of the house we stayed in.

Day #1 of hiking.

Day #2 of hiking. We hiked up to Angel's Landing - which has one of the best views in the park.

This is me, already exhausted before we were halfway up.
My view as I was catching my breath. This is the path that we had taken so far.

Taking some breaks along the hike to take pictures in the cool rock formations that we passed.
"Your safety is your own responsibility. Fatalities do occur." - Translation - if you fall, you die...don't fall.

"Are we there yet?" "Yes! Finally!"

We stopped in Nebraska at a roadside coffeeshop and discovered a barn arranged as a museum to remember the original settlers of nebraska. Behind the barn was a real sodhouse, arranged as it would've been in the 1860s. There was also a buffalo and an indian riding a horse made out of barbed wire. It took about 3 miles of barbed wire to make each one. It was a nice little break from driving.
It seems Nebraska was our "history state." We stopped in Grand Island to visit a living history museum, which ended up being quite extensive. It began with a beautiful park.
Then we walked through the gate and into the year 1862 of Railroad Town, Nebraska. Only two of the buildings were built new. Most of them were just moved from various towns to create the museum.
The stationmaster was a man whose father had once worked in the very same train station - back when it was in its original town. He was very knowledgeable about the trains and effects of the trains in towns and uses of the trains and different instruments in the station. We talked to him for about a half hour.

We drove pretty much straight through the rest of the way to Guelph. We pulled into the driveway at about 11:30 Friday night and surprised Daddy and Mama by arriving a day early.

Pictures from the fair!

Here are the pictures I promised from the fair. Katie and Hannah had fun on the rides.
Here is the traditional carousel picture I was sure to take for Mama.
Here we are watching a show. It was nice to sit down in the shade. It was such a hot day. Jack is trying to find Hannah who is hiding in the stroller.

"Go East, Young Woman, Go East..."

The Great Trek has begun. Katie arrived in Oregon on last Thursday. We spent a fun day Friday in Olympia visiting Uncle Steve and Aunt LaNea, Uncle Tom and Aunt Sherri, and our dear friend Smores. Of course, we had to go shopping, and we found some great deals.
Friday night we went to the drive-in movie in Dallas for a girls night with Heather. Saturday I went to Heather's house for a few hours to hang out while Katie spent the day with Grandma Bonnie. Grandma Bonnie made dinner for all the family who were able to come celebrate Katie's birthday on Sunday. Inside all of the fun were many good byes that were rather sad. But early Monday morning, we said good bye to Grandma Bonnie and Bill and began the first league of our journey - Grass Valley, CA. It took a few hours of loading and unloading, arranging and rearranging the back of the pick up, but we got it in - dresser, night stand, bike, and a few other things too. :) The road south was a little heavier than the poor truck was expecting, but it made it safely to Grandma Morrish's house Monday night.

Tuesday was a relaxing day, which was lovely after our previously busy last few days. Katie and I hung out with Grandma and Jack for most of the day. For dinner we met Kevin, Kris, and Dresden; Adam, Leslie, Hannah, and Elijah; and Melissa, Charlie, and Jack at the park for a celebratory picnic dinner for Katie's 19th birthday!

The fair opened on Wednesday and we all enjoyed the animals and the food and the shows. Katie had fun with Hannah on a few rides. As a grand finale of the rides, Katie and Charlie rode one of those that flip you upside down. I have pictures, but I haven't loaded them onto my computer yet, so they will come soon. It was a very enjoyable day and so great to spend it with our cousins and grandma in Grass Valley.

We drove to Redondo Beach today and had dinner with Alan. It was so fun to see him! Christmas was the last time we all saw each other, so we all had a lot to talk about.

Well, that's all for now. More to come in a couple days...And with pictures, I promise.

One day...

The author of the blog, The Captive Reader, has a frequent themed post in which she posts beautiful or unique pictures of libraries. Needless to say I drool over these posts every time, dreaming up my own perfect library - of which my house will have one. With floor to ceiling bookshelves and a window seat and a huge comfy chair and carpet so I sit comfortably on the floor with my latest project spread out around me. And a beautiful desk to keep my computer on and use to write letters and to hold my typewriter. One day...

(The above photos are all from  The Captive Reader)

It inspired me to dig through my pictures and find my own library picture. I have one.

Overlooking a river...
...filled with old books in a strange language.
The only gap in the books are the windows that let the light stream in. Vaulted ceiling and tiled floors. And thousands of books. This library belongs to Melk Abbey in Austria.
When I see this picture I imagine all of the explorers, setting off to see what the world holds, and that all of those books contain descriptions of their discoveries. Can you imagine all of the adventures between the covers of those books? Stories of a world being explored.
(Of course, I have no idea what those books really say. )

Do you have a dream library/office/project area?

"The First Rainbow"

My freshman or sophomore year at Corban, I took a class on Teaching the Bible. One of our first assignments was to write the story of Noah's Ark so that it would be interesting to young children. I had an idea, but I needed a little help from Ben and Emma. I asked them what their favorite animals were and they gave me four. I don't think anyone has ever seen it - except my professor. I was going through my stuff, repacking for the move, when I found it. Ben and Emma at least, should read it. And (if I may) I rather like it.

The First Rainbow
A long time ago on an earth that was not so old as it is now, four friends played together all day long. Zebra was very fast and loved to run. Hippo was very shy. Elephant (Ellie for short) was very curious. Mantis’ favorite thing to do was to hide in tiny places and then jump out suddenly and scare his friends.
One day the four friends were wandering around looking for something new to do when they came upon something they had never seen before. “What is it?” asked Ellie.
“Let’s go see!” Zebra suggested.
“What if it’s dangerous?” Hippo said softly.

“I’ll scout it out!” Mantis declared. Off he flew before anyone could stop him. He was gone so long that Hippo began to say, “Oh dear, something dreadful has happened!” over and over again.
At last Mantis returned. “It’s something called an ‘ark,’” he said. “All kinds of animals were going into it. Some of the animals I’ve never seen before.”
“What happened to them?” Ellie asked.
“They were given a bed and food,” Mantis replied.
“How do you know?” Zebra asked doubtfully.
“I snuck in when the man wasn’t looking.”
“What man?” Hippo asked.
“The man at the door counting the animals.” Mantis said. “There were three other men and four women there too.”
“Let’s go see for ourselves!” Ellie declared.
Without waiting for the others Zebra ran ahead. The others followed cautiously.

When they all got to the “ark” they found a long line of animals. Zebra was already half-way up the line. Hippo, Mantis, and Ellie got into the line and looked at all the strange animals. “What kind of animal is that?” Ellie asked, pointing with her long trunk at a black and white animal standing upright. It appeared to have no legs and waddled forward.
“Maybe it’s related to Zebra,” Hippo suggested. “It’s the same color.”
Finally Hippo, Mantis, and Ellie stepped onto the “ark.” They were each given a bed of straw and some food just like Mantis had said.
“Where’s Zebra?” Hippo wondered.
“I’ll look for him,” Mantis said and disappeared again. Son he came back riding on Zebra’s back. “The ‘ark’ is huge!” Mantis said.
“Can we explore?” Ellie begged.

The four friends explored everywhere they could fit in the “ark.” They saw many kinds of animals. There were giraffes and monkeys, sheep and horses. They discovered that the black and white animal they’d seen earlier was a penguin and not at all related to Zebra. Mantis even met some mosquitoes and spiders while he was exploring the tiniest places.
Suddenly, a loud sound frightened all the animals! Then the “ark” began to sway! Ellie screamed, Hippo trembled, Mantis dove into a crack in the wood, and Zebra tried to run away, but ran into a wall instead. They’d never heard or felt anything like it before.
All four of them were huddled in a corner when a kind voice said, “Here they are, Noah. Our lost animals.” It was one of the women. A man appeared with her. They coaxed Zebra, Hippo, Mantis, and Ellie back to their stalls and spoke softly to them. Soon, they were all asleep.
Many days passed and the animals began to feel comfortable on the swaying “ark.” They were allowed to explore as much as they wanted. They talked to some very interesting animals from all over the world. One of their new friends was Dove. She was a beautiful white bird. One day they found her sitting in a window that opened to blue sky and a lot of water. She was panting as if she had just been flying. “Where did you go, Dove?” Ellie asked.
“Yesterday Noah sent Raven to see if there was any land. She came back and said there wasn’t. Today he sent me. See, I found an olive branch. The water is going down.”
“Do we get to leave now?” Hippo asked. She was tired of being on the ark for so long.

“Not yet. There still isn’t any land.”
A few days later, Zebra, Hippo, Mantis, and Ellie went to talk to Dove, but she was no where to be found. “She’s found land,” Noah told them. “It’s time to leave the ark.”
When Zebra, Hippo, Mantis, and Ellie stepped off of the ark they all took deep breaths. The air smelled fresh and new like,…well, like rain. Suddenly Hippo cried, “Look! Look there in the sky! Oh, it’s so pretty!”
“What is it?” Ellie asked.
Just then they heard Noah say to his wife and sons and his sons’ wives. “It’s God’s covenant with us that He will never flood the whole earth again. It’s a rainbow.”

So there it is. Hope you liked it. Thanks, Ben and Emma! Can you guess which animals were Ben's (3) and which was Emma's?

Wedding Fun

Oops, a few weeks late. I can't believe Heather and David have been married for more than three weeks!

"The future Mrs. Holcomb"
"June 16, 2012"
Heather made her own bridal bouquet. I think she's rather happy with it. :)
They're getting married!

First dance.
Goodbye!

Three of the seven bridesmaids. Meredith and Andrea stayed with Heather and I for a few days before the wedding.  They were lots of fun!

I like the progression in this series of photos. Each one is more and more significant for Heather. And I got to be at all of them!!
